About Dr. Adelberg

By trade, Dr. Adelberg is an ER Physician, trauma specialist. He flies into rural area hospital emergency departments that can't find doctors to stay staffed. Rain or shine, Dr. Adelberg is always on time!

Dr. Adelberg is a subject matter expert on FAA Flight Physicals. Not only has he been a Senior AME for many years, he's a Private Pilot and has been an Airline Transport Pilot. He goes through the stressful process of having an annual, special issuance flight physical, and understands the detailed process. He also just celebrated his 49th year anniversary of flying!

Dr. Adelberg is a graduate of The University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario, Canada. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio, in 1987.

Practicing medicine for more than 40 years, in numerous states throughout the US, as well as in Canada, he holds multiple specialty certifications, including:

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support

Pediatric Advanced Life Support

Basic Life Support

Advanced Trauma Life Support

Senior Aviation Medical Examiner

A few years ago, Dr. Adelberg sold his chain of Urgent Cares and Employee Health and Wellness Centers in South Florida and relocated to Panama City, Florida. This was his way of slowing down, but the call of duty arrived and we’re thrilled to bring our services and his expertise to Panama City.

Dr. Adelberg continues to work his ER shifts throughout each month and this keeps him in the air, where he finds just as much peace as he does caring for his patients.

Medical Certificate:

A medical examination, by an AME, is required to complete the medical clearance/certification process.

MEDICAL CERTIFICATES ARE DESIGNATED AS:

  • FIRST-CLASS LASTING FOR 6 MONTHS

  • SECOND-CLASS LASTING FOR 1 YEAR

  • THIRD CLASS LASTING FOR 2 YEARS

KEEP IN MIND THESE TIME FRAMES ARE ONLY IF NOTHING MEDICAL COMES UP DURING THE TIME PERIOD.

GENERALLY:

AN AIRMAN IN GENERAL SHOULD ONLY REQUEST THE LENGTHIEST FLIGHT PHYSICAL REQUIRED FOR THEIR AVIATION ACTIVITIES.

  • FIRST-CLASS IS DESIGNED FOR THE AIRLINE TRANSPORT PILOT (ATP)

  • SECOND-CLASS FOR THE COMMERCIAL PILOT

  • THIRD-CLASS FOR THE STUDENT, RECREATIONAL, AND PRIVATE PILOT

THERE IS ALSO A

  • SPECIAL ISSUANCE CERTIFICATE,

Issued by the FAA in response to

certain medical conditions that occur

during an airman's career.

These are normally good for 1 year,

depending on the condition.

It's extremely important to note:

Many physicians are intimidated by

these medical examinations, and I

mean who wouldn't be, without the

expertise and experience...

FEAR NOT, THE FLYING DOC IS HERE!

TYPES OF AVIATION MEDICAL EXAMS

Getting a Medical Certificate and

FAA MedXPress

To obtain a medical certificate you must be examined by an FAA - designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), hopefully Dr. Adelberg!

  • Create an account in MedXPress. You will answer a series of medical questions and submit your application. You need to complete the exam within 60 days.
  • Your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), Dr. J.M. Adelberg, will need the confirmation number provided to you during the medical questionnaire process, to move your appointment forward.

Receiving your Medical Certificate

At your scheduled appointment, Dr. Adelberg will complete your medical examination and the remainder of the FAA application form. If you meet the required medical standards, Dr. Adelberg will issue you a medical certificate.

Furthermore, If there are medical conditions being treated, those documents will be meticulously reviewed. Note:

  • If required documentation is present, has been positively reviewed by the AME, and everything in the examination meets the FAA medical standards set forth in 14 C.F.R. part 67, the AME will issue you a medical certificate.

  • For some conditions, or if missing required documentation, the AME must defer the examination to the FAA for review and/or further investigation.

  • In very rare cases, an AME can deny for a specifically disqualifying condition as delineated in 14 C.F.R. part 67.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your AME and/or their staff will collect your vitals (height, weight, pulse, blood pressure, etc.); test your eyes (visual acuity/depth perception/color vision); perform an audiogram (hearing test) and EKG if required; and collect and test a urine sample. An EKG tracing will require exposing your chest for lead placement.

What to Bring to Your Visit

  • MedXPress Assigned Number.
  • Photo ID - Passport or Drivers License.
  • If you wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring a case to place items into safely during your eye exam portion.
  • If applicable, medical progress notes and all related/required test results. See below.

Important! To learn more about a

Clinical Progress Note, see:

https://www.faa.gov/ame_guide/media/PilotInformation_DetailedClinicalProgressNote.pdf.   (PDF).

  • It is highly recommended that if you have any current or past medical condition(s) or take medication(s), you research the requirements for medical certification here: (www.faa.gov/go/ameguide). For some conditions, your AME may be able to issue a medical certificate immediately if you have the correct documentation at the time of your exam. Without the correct documentation, your medical certification may be delayed.

What Happens if I am Deferred

If the AME defers your examination, you will receive a letter from the FAA, listing the items you need to provide to the FAA (most will be medical records) regarding your condition(s) or medication(s).

If medical records are required, make sure you obtain the actual current (no more than 90 days), detailed, Clinical Progress Notes (PDF) from your physician/provider. Patient Portal notes or an After Visit Summary do not meet the criteria are NOT sufficient for FAA purposes.

Documents received may be reviewed by an FAA physician with expertise in aerospace medicine, occupational medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, or a variety of specialties such as ENT, cardiology, ophthalmology, rheumatology, and/or others.

  • When you obtain these documents, take them to your AME so they can electronically add them to your record. This is the fastest way to get documents to the FAA.
  • The FAA will send you written notification about the results of its review of your medical application. A failure to provide all required or requested medical information will result in a delay of your medical certificate issuance or a denial of your medical application.
